Quito, February, 2025.- In recent days, Fundación Future, and Fundación Jocotoco celebrated their alliance at Biological Reserve Yanacocha, located on the western slope of the Guagua Pichincha volcano. During the event, both organizations signed an agreement to integrate this valuable ecosystem into the NFtree plataform, an innovative project that uses blockchain technology to finance the conservation of high-value ecological areas in Ecuador.
NFTree tokenizes, through blockchain technology and artificial intelligence, the carbon capture of 195,000 hectares in the Chocó Andino. This process is validated by specialized scientists and academics to ensure an accurate calculation methodology, allowing companies and individuals to mitigate their environmental impact by purchasing "pixels," which guarantee the long-term protection of this ecosystem.
Yanacocha represents a key milestone as it is the first páramo ecosystem incorporated into the platform and It will enable the conservation of 647 hectares of cloud forest,capable of capturing up to 5,901 tons of CO2 equivalent,, and 431 hectares of páramo,with the potential to remove 2,360 tons of CO2 equivalent.
Several entities attended the event, including Vitality, SaludSa, Bet Endurance Team, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and representatives from both foundations.These organizations recognize the importance of conservation and are positioned as key academic partners in precisely measuring carbon capture capacity. This support opens the door for more companies to join the initiative, offset their environmental footprint, and contribute to conserving Ecuador’s natural heritage. Additionally, organizations participating in this initiative will receive recognition for their environmental commitment.
The event brought together prominent representatives from the environmental and business sectors, including Miguel Sevilla, President of Fundación Futuro, and Antonio Páez, President of Fundación Jocotoco. As a symbol of both organizations’ commitment to environmental protection, they exchanged a three-dimensional NFTree,representing innovation and technology in service of conservation.
During his speech, Antonio Páez emphasized the need for new financing mechanisms for conservation, highlighting that páramos and cloud forests are irreplaceable ecosystems essential for carbon capture and climate change mitigation. Meanwhile, Miguel Sevilla stressed the importance of collaboration between organizations with a shared vision, amplifying the positive impact in Ecuador. "It fills us with hope to know that together we can achieve real change. We invite companies, foundations, and organizations to join this initiative to expand conservation efforts and ensure a sustainable future for the next generations," said Sevilla.
